During my college career, I was President of the university’s LGBTQ+ club, Haven, for two years. This was the beginning of my experience as a leader in activism and it showed me that I am both capable of and excited about advocating for and improving the lives of historically marginalized individuals. As the club’s President, I worked with co-leaders to plan weekly in-person or virtual meetings, sent emails to over 100 club members and participated in campus activism—including attending a sit-in and writing a letter in protest of the school’s discriminatory statement on human sexuality. I communicated both via email and in person with co-leaders, club members, faculty advisors and the organization in charge of club continuance. This position also allowed me to develop skills in marketing and advertising, as I promoted meetings, designed and delivered presentations with appealing visuals, and organized events. I also worked with the club’s Publicist on social media marketing and designed and controlled the club website. Public speaking was another prominent part of this position and I was able to do so in a way that was both effective and entertaining. Most importantly, I cultivated an environment that provided education, acceptance, resources and support for individuals of all backgrounds. Of all my roles in a work or school-related setting, this is the one about which I have been the most passionate. I aspire to continue this work in my professional career.
